Cataract Surgeries

When it comes to treating cataract, trust nothing but the best

cataract

Why are they caused?

There are various causes for cataract formation. Some of the more common ones are:

  • Increasing Age
  • Exposure to UltraViolet Radiation
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Diabetes,
  • Hypertension
  • Injury
  • By birth (congenital cataract)
  • Metabolic disorders (galactosemia, mucopolysaccharidoses)

With ageing as well as the aforementioned conditions, the ocular capacity to withstand insult due to oxidative stress is reduced. The natural proteins of the eye are not able to withstand the tissue injury due to various causes (oxidative stress) – hence they degenerate and become cloudy or opaque.

What are the symptoms of cataract?

  • Blurred or foggy vision where colours may seem yellowed/washed out
  • Frequent change of spectacle numbers
  • An increased sensitivity to glare, especially at night
  • Curtain like feeling over eyes—as if seeing through a filter paper

A complete eye examination will definitely diagnose the presence of cataract by your eye specialist.

What is the treatment for cataract?

The only definitive treatment is surgical removal. Changing the glasses is not only temporary, but mostly ineffective.

When should you get operated?

You and the eye surgeon will decide together when the cataract is to be surgically removed. Normally, whenever the cataract interferes or is likely to interfere with routine day-to-day activities, it is time to remove it.

What will happen if I am not treated?

If you don’t get treated the cataract becomes harder with age and more difficult for the operating surgeon to remove and also leads to longer post-operative recovery time. In serious cases it can mature or ripen which will result in an increased chance of getting glaucoma – increased eye pressure – which is an ocular emergency.

Why You Should Choose Us

Complex Cataract Procedures

A cataract surgery is a complex procedure, so you should let only the best treat you. At Navi Mumbai Eye Clinic, we have a team of experts all of whom carry over 15+ years of experience in complex cataract surgeries such as brown cataracts, cataracts with small pupil, mature cataracts, posterior polar cataracts, subluxated cataracts, and paediatric cataracts.

Latest Technologies

We employ the latest procedure of Phacolemulsification (Phaco Surgery), which is the safest and effective form of cataract surgery; takes a maximum of 5 to 7 minutes. It's a minimum invasive procedure, in which patients are discharged within half an hour of the procedure. The recovery period is also quiet fast; usually 24 - 48 hours. We also use the latest equipment for the procedure - Laurette Phacoemulsifier from Alcon, USA. We also provide the best quality foldable implanted lenses and our services are very economical.

Cataract and its Treatment

Details About Cataract Surgeries

cataract
The mere presence of a cataract does not need surgery. A cataract needs to be removed only when vision loss interferes with your everyday activities such as driving, reading, or watching TV. The decision to have cataract surgery is usually made by both the patient and the doctor together.. We routinely perform a minimally invasive cataract surgery called Phacoemulsification.

Features of the Procedure

The patient is given anaesthesia to numb the eye in the form of eye drops. A tiny incision (2.8 mm or less) is fashioned on the eye to facilitate insertion of a small ultrasonic probe. This probe crushes, or emulsifies the cloudy lens into tiny pieces and gently sucks the debris out of the eye in a matter of a few minutes. An intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted in its place.

Types of Lenses

Monofocal Lens

Traditionally lenses were rigid, necessitating bigger incisions and stitches, thus resulting in longer recovery period. Also the sutures would cause irritation, redness, watering etc. besides inducing a spectacle number which would be unpredictable.

The size of the cataract is roughly the size of a regular sized button (collar button) 8mm

This means that the IOL implanted would also be the same size, thus necessitating a similar sized incision.

Today with advent of foldable lenses, the lens is actually rolled onto itself, thus greatly reducing incision size. The wound is practically self-sealing without for any stiches.

Monofocal lenses are intended to give clear distance vision, and will necessitate glasses for near fine print.

Multifocal Lens

Traditional IOLs after cataract surgery were only able to correct distance vision, often leaving patients with the need for reading glasses. Multifocal IOLs on the other hand, offer patients freedom from glasses after cataract surgery by improving vision at all distances and at any time of the day. Up to 85 percent of patients do not need to rely on glasses with multifocal IOLs.

The Acrysof Restor IOL is a unique patented IOL that offers significant freedom from glasses overall for distance and near post cataract surgery. Due to its unique design, it allows gives the person proper reading and distance vision at the same time and eradicates the need for glasses. About 85 % of patients implanted with Restor IOL never need to use glasses post op for all routine work.

Toric Lens

Some eyes typically have astigmatism—i.e. the cornea is shaped like an egg or the back of a spoon with one surface more curved than the other. The lenses however are spherical in shape—like a football.

These Toric IOLs are specially designed for such patients, thus correcting the mismatch between the cornea and the lens implanted.

We use one of the leading brands of IOLs from Alcon labs USA, which has been successfully implanted in more than 100 million eyes (10  crore eyes) all over the world.

Irrigating Solution

Surgery causes stress to the cornea, retina and other eye structures.

BSS (Balanced Salt Solution) by Alcon USA, provides nourishment, promotes a safe environment, and helps restore health to ocular tissues. Furthermore, the properties of BSS are close to Aqueous Humor, one of the fluids present naturally in our eyes.

Note

All patients undergoing cataract surgeries may not be ideal candidates for Multifocal / Toric lenses. Various factors like pre-operative refractive errors, visual needs, occupation, lifestyle etc. have to be taken into consideration before going in for these lenses. You may discuss the possible advantages & disadvantages in further details with us.
